The Cost of Absenteeism

One of the most effortless techniques to accelerate in a business is the simple task of being present to work. For countless individuals this is easy but for others it is more complex. The explanations for their absenteeism, valid or not, may include family obligations, illness, seasonal hobbies or merely not caring. Several employees will try to justify their absenteeism with excuses but there is no avoiding the obvious fact that they were not there when asked to be. At Maplewood Meats our goal is to deliver quality meat to our customers, along with a friendly experience and fast customer service. Since being a retail store we hire several student workers to wait on counter, especially during the holiday and summer seasons. On a mandatory Saturday two employee students decided to simply not show up. When other employees noticed the absence they were angry, frustrated and felt it was unfair. Financially, in that day’s productivity Maplewood loss the benefits of two workers helping customer and the overtime cost of the other employees having to work harder and longer. For the one employee who was an outstanding worker with no past history of this behavior we simply sat down with them and explained how they need to handle this situation in the future. As for the other individual that had a previous record of this behavior and with various management meeting we simply told them not to come back. If we had taken her back it would have shower the other employees that this behavior is acceptable and management had no rules. In her absence we hired two new individuals, costing us time and training. In the future Maplewood will focus on precise job interviews, employee surveys, merit based award and anticipating leaves in an effort to eliminate absenteeism.
